Hurricane Helene has devastated large swaths of the southeastern US. As of Wednesday, October 2nd, more than 190 people across nine states died as a result of the storm, making it the deadliest hurricane to strike the continental United States since Hurricane Katrina. In western North Carolina, downed trees, washed out roads, landslides and lack of cellphone service have made it challenging to find the hundreds of people who are still unaccounted for. Many areas still do not have water, power or cell phone service. This is expected to last for some time.
The IEEE-USA MOVE-1 Truck with Region 3 members, Grayson Randall and Ira Arman, has been in Asheville, NC since Saturday, September 28th providing power and internet to the Incident Management Team, Red Cross, and law enforcement. The IEEE-USA MOVE-2 Truck with Region 5 member Bill Wooton, and Region 3 member, Mark Torres is also in Asheville at the Red Cross Chapter headquarters with desperately needed power and communications equipment.
The MOVE program is committed to assisting victims of and responders to natural disasters with short-term communications and power solutions.
